Home EV Charger Installation in California: A Practical Guide

Level 1 vs Level 2, hardwired vs plug-in, what a load calculation actually checks, and how to avoid paying for a panel upgrade you may not need.

California has more electric vehicles than any other state, and the single most common question we get from new owners is some version of: do I need to rewire my house to charge this thing?

Usually, no. But the answer depends entirely on numbers specific to your home.

If you drive under 40 miles a day and can leave the car plugged in overnight, Level 1 genuinely works. Above that, Level 2 stops being a convenience and becomes necessary.

Hardwired or a 14-50 outlet?

A NEMA 14-50 receptacle gives you flexibility: take the charger when you move, swap brands later, use the outlet for other 240V equipment. It caps out at 40 amps of continuous draw.

Hardwiring supports 48 amps and up, removes the plug as a failure point, and is required by some units. If you are installing at the top of the range, hardwire it. Plug-in connections at high continuous current are the most common source of the melted-plug photos you see in EV forums, and it is nearly always a cheap receptacle rather than the car.

What a load calculation actually checks

An EV charger is a continuous load, which means the circuit is sized at 125% of the charger's draw. A 40 amp charger needs a 50 amp breaker and conductors rated accordingly.

The load calculation asks whether your service can carry existing demand plus that new continuous load. It accounts for square footage, your range, dryer, water heater, HVAC and any other large fixed appliances, using a standard method rather than guesswork. A 100 amp service in a home with electric range and electric dryer is often already close to its limit before a charger is added.

Three ways forward if capacity is short

  1. Upgrade the service. 200 amps solves it permanently and leaves room for a heat pump or induction range later. Highest cost, best long-term position.
  2. Load management. A device that monitors total consumption and throttles or pauses the charger when the house is busy. Far cheaper than an upgrade, and because the car is parked for eight hours you rarely notice. Not suitable for every configuration.
  3. Charge at a lower rate. Most chargers let you set a lower current limit. A 24 amp setting still adds around 20 miles an hour, which is plenty for a lot of drivers.

Things that add cost, and are worth asking about

  • Distance from the panel. Long runs need larger conductors for voltage drop. This is not upselling, it is arithmetic.
  • Detached garage. The existing feeder usually can't carry a charger, so plan on a new feeder and a small subpanel.
  • Trenching. Any run under a driveway or lawn is a separate cost line.
  • Panel spaces. A full panel means a subpanel or an upgrade before anything else happens.
  • Outdoor installation. Needs a weather-rated unit and appropriate raceway, not an indoor charger with a lid over it.

Permits are not optional

EVSE circuits are permitted and inspected work in California jurisdictions. Skipping the permit creates an unpermitted 240 volt circuit that surfaces during a sale, can complicate an insurance claim, and may void a utility rebate. Rebate and incentive programs change often, so check current availability with your utility before you buy hardware.
